Tips For Soldering Jump Rings For Secure Scalemail Weaves

If you're using metal components in your scalemail weaves, they should all be soldered together to prevent them from breaking off. While this might sound time-consuming and expensive, it's actually pretty easy to do and will ensure that your jewellery remains intact for the long term.

  • First, you'll need to decide what type of jump ring you need. There are two main types: open and closed.
  • An open jump ring is a small loop with a narrow cut that works as an opening, so it can be opened with pliers to thread other components onto it. These can then be soldered closed to form a solid connection.
  • Closed jump rings are similar, but without an opening and can be soldered directly onto jewellery pieces or threaded onto other components. These are often used as a base for earrings or pendants, but they can also be incorporated into other jewellery designs and used to create necklace chains.
  • You can find all sorts of different sizes of jump rings at your local craft store, but you'll need to be sure to choose the right one for your design. Generally, 3.5-4mm 20-gauge jump rings work well for earrings, while 6mm 18-gauge jump rings are a good choice for necklace chains.
  • Before you start soldering jump rings, make sure your tool is working properly. Not all soldering irons were designed for jewelry making, so look for one with a chisel tip and a minimum of 60 watts.
